Assembling with or without the VT6

The VT6 is a stand alone project to build an ASCII terminal using a standard VGA monitor as the display and PS/2 keyboard for typing. The SBC6120-RC requires some kind of terminal, and you can connect any terminal (or PC running terminal emulation software) of your choice to the DB9 connector at J3. However, the SBC6120-RC has a pre-wired area where a VT6 terminal can be attached directly to the SBC6120-RC PCB as a daughter card. This allows the SBC6120-RC to be used directly with a VGA monitor and PS/2 keyboard and no additional terminal is required.

If you will be installing the VT6 daughter card then there are a couple of additional components that need to be installed on the SBC6120-RC main board. Alternatively, if you will not be installing the VT6 then there are a couple of components that are not installed on the SBC6120 board. This section summarizes those differences, and you should keep them in mind as you go thru the rest of the assembly process.

[edit] If you WILL NOT be installing the VT6 daughter card

  • Do not install parts D2, D3, R6, J2 or J4
  • Install a wire jumper in place of D2

NOTE
If you purchased the SBC6120-RC kit, then D2, D3, R6, J2 and J4 are not supplied unless you also purchase the VT6 at the same time. However these are very common parts (please refer to the parts list) and you can always add them yourself if you decide to install a VT6 at a later time.

[edit] If you WILL be installing the VT6 daughter card

  • Install parts D2, D3, and R6 as directed in the next section
  • Install a 2 pin female header at J2 and a 10 pin female header at J4

Also, when building the VT6 you will need to omit a few parts and install a few others. The following instructions refer to the VT6 board and parts list, not the SBC6120-RC!

  • Omit VR1, C12, C13, D1, J2 and J3.
  • Install a 2 pin male header at J5 on the solder side of the VT6 PCB. The pins will point downward.
  • Install a 10 pin male header at J6 on the solder side of the VT6 PCB.

NOTE
If you purchased the VT6 kit together with the SBC6120-RC, then VR1, C12, C13, D1, J2 and J3 will not be supplied and instead the two headers for J5 and J6 will be included. If you buy the VT6 separately, you will need to supply these two headers yourself.

When you are ready, proceed to Assembling the PC board.
